Aspartame and the phenylketonuria notice

All four Singles To Go flavors list aspartame and acesulfame potassium. Federal rules require a notice on any food with aspartame, and the box prints it.

The notice matters to people with phenylketonuria, who cannot break down phenylalanine. For everyone else the FDA holds the sweetener safe at approved levels.

However, people with difficulty metabolizing phenylalanine because of a rare genetic disorder called phenylketonuria (PKU) should avoid or restrict aspartame.

What sugar free means on the box

Sugar free is a defined claim. The rule allows it for a food with less than 0.5 g of sugars a serving, and it explains the asterisk on maltodextrin: an ingredient that adds a trivial amount of sugar.

The same rule keeps calorie free for foods under 5 calories. At 5 calories a stick, Singles To Go print low calorie instead.

The colors

Every flavor lists one or two certified colors: Red 40, Blue 1, Yellow 5 or Yellow 6. Each sits in the part of the list that makes up 2% or less of the mix.

If you avoid a color, check that flavor's row in the table before you buy.

Gluten free, as printed

The Singles To Go boxes print gluten free on the front. The Pitcher Packs cartons make no such claim either way.

must contain less than 20 parts per million (ppm) of gluten.

The figures on sugar, calories and sweeteners are label and agency facts, not medical advice. For a diet question, ask a doctor or a registered dietitian.
