About the brand

Flavor Aid, a stick at a time

A drink mix from 1932

Flavor Aid is the drink mix of The Jel Sert Company of West Chicago, Illinois. Federal trademark records put the name in commerce on May 2, 1932, first spelled Fla-Vor-Ade.

The idea is plain: a small packet of flavor, a pitcher of cold water and sugar from your own pantry.

Jel Sert still makes it, alongside its freezer pops, and prints West Chicago, Illinois on every box.

By the end of the decade, we introduced our take on the trend with the Flavor-Aid line of drink mixes.

From paper packet to stick

The Pitcher Packs carton prints it across the top: same great flavors, now in a stick. A carton holds 6 sticks and each stick flavors 2 quarts.

The Flavor Aid lineup sold here comes by the case of 12 cartons. That is 144 quarts of Cherry, Grape or Tropical Punch, or 36 gallons.

Seven flavors, seven colors

Each flavor wears its color. Cherry is red, Grape is purple, and Tropical Punch comes in a sky-blue carton and pours red. The aguas frescas sticks run pink, green, orange and deep red.

The color tells you the flavor before you read the name. That helps when four kinds of stick share one box.

All Flavor Aid flavors

Unsweetened means you hold the spoon

A Pitcher Packs stick brings flavor, color and vitamin C, and no sweetener. The directions ask for 3/4 to 1 cup of sugar, or a no-calorie sweetener for a low-calorie pitcher.

Buyers use that freedom. One writes of 5 teaspoons of sugar in 2 quarts, another of stevia in a full gallon.

Aguas frescas for the water bottle

Singles To Go carry four aguas frescas flavors: Strawberry Watermelon, Cucumber Limeaid, Mango and Jamaica, the hibiscus one. Each stick is sugar free and holds 5 calories.

The sticks sweeten with aspartame and acesulfame potassium, so the box prints a notice for people with phenylketonuria.

A buyer who drinks them daily writes that a couple of shakes in a 16 oz bottle is all it takes.

What the boxes print

The numbers come off the boxes. A Pitcher Packs panel shows 0 calories and 10 mg of vitamin C a serving. A Singles To Go panel shows 5 calories, 0 grams of sugar and 0 milligrams of sodium a stick.

Both print English and Spanish side by side: Cereza, Uva, Jugo Tropical, Limonada de Pepino, Sandía Fresa.

A case of Pitcher Packs is $17.98 today, or 25¢ a stick. Each stick pours 8 glasses, so the mix in a glass costs 3.1¢. Singles To Go cost 9.4¢ a glass, and that price includes the sweetener.

Who should pick which

A case of Pitcher Packs suits a house that mixes by the pitcher: school lunches, a ball team, a church kitchen. It is a poor fit for one person, who would be drinking the same flavor for months.

The Flavor Aid range for one person is Singles To Go. Skip it if you avoid aspartame, and take the pitcher sticks with your own sugar instead.

A sugar-free stick will not taste like a pitcher made with a full cup of sugar. Buyers say so in both directions.

What Flavor-Aid.com does

We are a small independent shop guide. We keep the Flavor Aid boxes, their prices and their label facts in one place, and we update the prices on a schedule.

When you pick a box, our retail partner takes the payment and handles delivery and returns. Jel Sert's drink mix does the rest.

What we add is the arithmetic the box leaves to you: what a stick costs, what a quart costs and how much sugar lands in a glass.

What buyers say about Flavor Aid

A Great Tasting “Kool Aid”

I’ve read some of the other reviews and I think some may think this product is a sweetened mix for your water bottle. It is not. You mix this with two quarts of water and add your own sweetener. I use one teaspoon of pure stevia extract powder with 2 packets for a full gallon and it tastes perfect. The price is great. It is half the price of Kool Aid brand drink mixes.

Same Great Flavor Everytime!

These powered drink mix packets have been my daily go to drink for the past year, I never get tired of the flavor. They mix very well with just a couple shakes in a normal 16 oz water bottle, very refreshing and my go to drink whenever I just don't want to drink plain water.

Artificial sweeteners

I love the taste, but the sweetener changed from stevia to the standard sweeteners in soda. Artificial sweeteners irritate my brother. So because of that, I will not be able to order them again.
